Milltown Cemetery opened in 1869 to serve Belfast’s Catholic population and today contains tens of thousands of burials, from ordinary families in unmarked plots to soldiers of two world wars and the victims of the Spanish flu pandemic. Over time the cemetery also became closely associated with republican history, and many visitors come specifically to see the graves of hunger strikers and other figures whose names are tied to the politics of the Troubles. Milltown has also been touched by violence itself; in March 1988 a loyalist gunman launched a brutal attack during a republican funeral here, killing and wounding mourners and leaving an indelible mark on the place.

Alongside its political and social history, Milltown has gained a quieter reputation for being an uneasy place after dark. Visitors sometimes speak of unexplained sounds among the older plots, particularly in the poor-ground sections where thousands lie in anonymity. A persistent piece of local folklore claims that the grave of the nineteenth-century linen merchant Daniel Joseph Jaffe is haunted, and that his spirit was stirred after his memorial was vandalised. Others describe fleeting shadows or the sense of someone moving just outside their vision during evening visits. These stories remain unverified, but they are often repeated by those who explore the cemetery’s older paths after dusk.

Whether or not the tales have any basis in fact, Milltown Cemetery holds an emotional weight that is impossible to ignore. Its political history, its ordinary tragedies, and its sheer scale combine to create an atmosphere that many find sombre and compelling.
