Founded in 1142, Mellifont Abbey was the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland. It was established under the guidance of St. Malachy, then Archbishop of Armagh, who had visited the famous Abbey of Clairvaux in France during a journey to Rome. There, he met St. Bernard of Clairvaux, whom he asked to train a group of Irish companions in the Cistercian way of life.
These Irish monks, accompanied by ten French monks, went on to found Mellifont Abbey on the banks of the River Mattock in County Louth. The abbey quickly grew in influence and success, inspiring the foundation of numerous other Cistercian houses across Ireland.
Monastic life at Mellifont continued for nearly four centuries until 1539, when King Henry VIII ordered the dissolution of Catholic monasteries, priories, convents, and friaries across England, Wales, and Ireland as part of the Reformation.
Today, the ruins of Mellifont Abbey are open to the public—and some believe that the ghosts of monks still linger among the stones. Visitors have reported hearing unexplained footsteps, often attributed to these spectral monks, perhaps still carrying out their duties in the silence of the former cloister.
