In the late 19th century, during the Victorian era, a British newspaper reported on a remarkable haunting said to have occurred in a private residence on Marsh Road, Drogheda. The house was leased by Mr. and Mrs. Kinney, who agreed to pay Miss Weir, the owner, five pounds and fifteen shillings a quarter in rent.
Unbeknownst to them, the Kinneys would soon be sharing their new home with something far less earthly. On only their second night in the house, a ghostly presence announced itself. Mrs. Kinney was reportedly disturbed in her bed by unexplained noises and later terrified when heavy objects were thrown at her by an unseen force. The disturbances grew so intense that she refused to pay her rent, leading to a court case that became a talking point in local and national papers of the time.
Years later, the building was converted into what became known as The Marsh House Pub. But even in its new life, stories of supernatural activity persisted. Both staff and patrons have reported objects moving on their own, unexplained electrical malfunctions, and a television switching on and off by itself — even when unplugged.
The continuity of these reports, spanning more than a century, made The Marsh House one of Drogheda’s most enduring haunted sites.
