The original Mallow Castle is a fortified, late sixteenth century house, constructed for Sir Thomas Norreys – Lord-President of Munster.

Although the property is now in ruin, witnesses have reported seeing light emanating from the windows of the castle, and two spectral figures have been spotted walking along the avenue by the ruin at evening time. A phantom coach pulled by headless horses has also been sighted on the castle estate.
