Donald McNeale served for 20 years as a Major in the British Army with the 17th Lancers in India before selling his commission upon inheriting the lands at Faughart. In 1834, he moved to Faughart House, located across the Newry Road from Mountpleasant House, where he lived until his death in 1855.

Legend has it that McNeale’s spirit now haunts the area, riding his ghostly horse after nightfall, causing damage to any walls that stand in his path.
