This popular bar is reputedly haunted by the ghost of Mary Annes Wildes. In May 1910, the apartment above the pub (which was then known as “The Cape of Good Hope”) was leased to an artist by the name of Simon Bloom who ran a small business in the town. The two had previously worked together and Bloom had developed feelings for his former employee. But she had moved on and was engaged to be married to another man. According to a witness, Bloom had been pestering her – and she just wasn’t interested. On the 7th of May, in a fit of jealousy, Bloom attacked the young woman, leaving her with a gaping wound on her neck. Two passers-by brought her to the infirmary where she was later able to identify Bloom as her attacker. In the meantime, Bloom had tried (and failed) to take his own life back at his apartment. The following day, a deposition took place at the infirmary and Bloom refused to cross examine her, presumably out of guilt. Sadly, Mary Anne died later that day and Bloom was subsequently charged with her murder. He was found guilty and left the country on his release from prison.
Mary Anne’s ghost is believed to make occasional appearances at the property.
