London Street in Derry is home to one of the city’s more quietly unnerving ghost stories. The focus is a historic building that underwent refurbishment by the Inner City Trust. During the renovation work, several tradesmen and staff began reporting strange phenomena that grew increasingly difficult to dismiss. Most notably, the sound of heavy footsteps was frequently heard echoing up and down the staircase—even when no one else was present in the building.
One particularly chilling account came from a workman who felt a sudden tap on his shoulder. When he turned around, he was confronted by the figure of a tall man dressed in dark clothing. His features were indistinct, almost blurred, and before the workman could react, the figure vanished into thin air. Paralyzed with fear, the man was left shaken and unable to continue. Initially dismissed by colleagues as a prank, their scepticism quickly faded when multiple workers experienced similar encounters—seeing the figure, hearing the footsteps, or feeling the sudden drop in temperature that seemed to accompany the presence.
Even after the renovations were completed and the building was converted into office space, the strange activity continued. Employees working late would often hear phantom footsteps on the stairs or feel an unexplained clammy chill pass through the room, as if someone had silently walked past them. Though no clear cause was ever identified, these repeated disturbances created a lingering sense of unease.
In recent years, the reports have ceased, and no new sightings have been documented.
