The Limerick School of Art and Design on Clare Street is now a respected seat of learning and artistic expression, but the building and the site on which it is was constructed, has a much darker history.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the site was known as Farrancroghy and public executions were carried out here. An industrial school was later opened on the site, and in 1848, the land was sold and a Good Shepherd Convent with a Magdalene Laundry took its place. Over the course of 142 years, thousands of women and children were “processed” here. Such institutions were known for their cruel and unforgiving regimes, and even the architecture incorporated features that were designed to suppress the unfortunates that were housed within. 243 inmates were buried in unmarked graves, a further testament to how these poor women were viewed.

My source informs me that the building is haunted by nuns, but I can find no specific accounts to support this. It would not surprise me if the building was “active” given the history of this site, but if anyone can elaborate, please either “Add Your Experience” or Suggest an Amendment.
