On the peaceful shores of Lough Leane, just outside Killarney, stands The Lake Hotel. Originally built as a townhouse in 1820 and later expanded into a guest house, this family-run hotel still carries much of its old-world charm. Guests are drawn here not only for its warm welcome but also for its mountain views, woodlands, and easy access to the beauty of County Kerry.
Within the hotel grounds lie the ruins of the 12th-century McCarthy Mór Castle, once home to Donal Óg MacCarthy—better remembered as Dan of the Feathers. A fierce warrior, he earned his name by plucking the crests from the helmets of English soldiers he defeated, even claiming to have once slept in a bed stuffed with those feathers. Known equally for his love of drink and women, legend says Dan’s spirit lingers not in his ruined castle, but in the hotel’s bar, where some guests have reported seeing him gazing across the lake.
Dan is not the only presence here. In the hotel’s older wings, visitors have spoken of a young girl in 19th-century dress. Those who encounter her describe a sudden chill followed by a strange sense of calm. A psychic once tried to communicate with her, but her words came in an old local dialect—impossible to understand. Her identity remains a mystery.
Others have spoken of a figure walking the lakeshore on misty nights, sometimes accompanied by a dog. Whether echoes of history or restless spirits, The Lake Hotel remains a place where legend and hospitality intertwine.
Sometimes, guests share their ghostly experiences on travel websites. Snippets of these reviews may be shared here from time to time.
In the old section you will hear many odd noises during the night. You might find a closet opened that you know you closed. You might close that closet and find it open again in the am. Hmmmm Not a believer of anything spiritual, but its an unusual place.
