Killyleagh Castle, located in the village of Killyleagh, County Down, Northern Ireland, is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited castles in the country, with parts of its structure dating back to 1180. The castle was redesigned in the mid-19th century by renowned architect Sir Charles Lanyon, adopting the architectural style of a Loire Valley château. It has been in the possession of the Hamilton family since the early 17th century.
James Hamilton supported King Charles I during the English Civil War, and in 1649, Killyleagh Castle was besieged by Oliver Cromwell’s forces. Hamilton’s wife, is said to have negotiated a pardon for her husband. Her deep affection for the castle is believed to have bound her spirit to it, with her ghost still haunting the great hall to this day.
