Killegy sits on a low wooded hill just off the N71 near Muckross, within Killarney National Park. It is an atmospheric spot – a ruined mortuary chapel surrounded by crumbling crypts and modern graves, dominated by the Herbert Memorial Cross erected in honour of the family who owned Muckross House for much of the nineteenth century. The last private owner of the estate, Arthur Rose Vincent, who gifted the property to the Irish nation in 1932 to become Ireland’s first national park, is also buried here. Local tradition holds that he was interred sitting upright in a chair, waiting for judgement day – though the exact truth of that is debated.

The ghost said to haunt Killegy is named in local accounts as Sarah Reynolds, described as a young woman who worked as a servant at Muckross House and who entered a relationship with her employer. The circumstances of her death are said to be unclear, and it is this unresolved quality to her story that is offered as the reason for her continued presence at the cemetery.

However, no record of Sarah Reynolds has come to light in any historical source connected to Muckross House or the cemetery. Her name does not appear in surviving staff records, local history accounts, or the paranormal record beyond the account submitted here. That does not mean the story has no foundation – servant histories are often poorly documented – but it cannot currently be verified.

Strange occurrences have been reported at Killegy by visitors over the years, and the site has attracted the attention of paranormal investigators. Whether these are connected to Sarah Reynolds or to the cemetery’s longer history remains an open question.
