Established in 1932 as Ireland’s first national park, Killarney National Park covers over 10,000 hectares of ancient oak and yew woodland, three lakes, and the rugged terrain of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. It is one of the most visited natural landscapes in Ireland, and by day it draws walkers, cyclists, and jaunting cars in considerable numbers. After dusk, however, it becomes a different place entirely – dark, vast, and, according to at least two witnesses, home to something that has no obvious explanation.

In 2010, a couple were walking through the park as evening closed in. Joggers had been out on the paths earlier, but as dusk settled the park emptied around them. Coming close to the cathedral on the park’s edge, they noticed a large figure in the distance moving towards them. What stopped them was not its size but its shape – it appeared to be upright, walking on two legs, but had what looked like hooves. It was dark, but both were clear on what they had seen. They did not wait to get a closer look. They left the park at pace and did not return that evening.

What makes the account harder to set aside is that it was not the first of its kind. The Killarney Paranormal Society – an active local group with a documented record of investigating sites across Kerry – had previously received a separate account from another witness describing a figure matching the same description in the same area. When the Society investigated the park themselves, they reported noticing unusual activity, though they did not encounter the entity directly.

Two independent accounts of the same figure, in the same location, from witnesses with no apparent connection to each other. No identity has been proposed for what was seen, and nothing in the park’s recorded history or folklore accounts for it directly. Killarney’s wider supernatural tradition is rich – Ross Castle, Muckross Abbey, and the surrounding landscape carry centuries of legend – but this particular figure stands apart from all of it.
