Kavanagh’s opened in 1833 and describes itself as an “old school” pub. Until the 1970s, the main entrance to the cemetery was next to the door to the pub, and this lead to it being a popular choice for gravediggers and also a haunt for body snatchers. In recent years, these – now long gone – associations, have resulted in the pub being affectionately known by many as “the gravediggers”.

Staff who have worked at the pub over the years have recalled several strange experiences while working on the premises. The sound of keys jingling has been heard when there is nobody in the bar. An “aggressive” dog was once terrified by an unseen force in the bar area, and the ghost of a young girl in a white nightdress was spotted in an upstairs bedroom.

One ghost that has been seen on a few occasions is that of an elderly gentleman in a tweed suit. He appears at the bar and will be quietly sipping a pint, before disappearing. On one occasion, the barman was closing up late one night and the last few customers complained to him that they were being put out while there was still an old man in Victorian clothing drinking undisturbed at the bar. Of course, there was nobody there.
