Perched above Dublin Bay on the wooded slopes of Howth Head, Howth Castle has been home to the St Lawrence family for more than 800 years — one of the oldest continuously inhabited estates in Ireland. The current structure, an evolution of medieval, Tudor-revival and Georgian architecture, carries centuries of history, intrigue — and ghost story.
The best-known legend of Howth Castle speaks of a ghostly albino rat that appears whenever misfortune threatens the House of St Lawrence. According to family lore, the omen first manifested after a tragedy at sea centuries ago: a shipwreck survivor had been taken in at the castle, leaving behind a silken ribbon said to protect the family. When the charm was disturbed, disaster struck — and that night a large white rat was seen darting across the hearth.
Ever since, sightings of the pale rat are believed to foreshadow death or calamity within the family. It is said to emerge from the old cellars or appear on the staircase in the days before misfortune.
Another enduring tale tells of a White Lady who wanders the gardens and terraces overlooking the harbour. Dressed in flowing pale robes, she is said to appear on misty evenings, gazing toward the sea as if waiting for a ship that never returns. Some connect her to the 16th-century pirate attack on Howth, when Lady Aideen St Lawrence was briefly taken hostage by the corsair Grace O’Malley — a meeting that famously led to the castle’s tradition of keeping its gates open at mealtimes for any traveller in need. Others believe she mourns a lost sailor or lover drowned in Dublin Bay.
Linked to the St Lawrence family crest — which bears a mermaid holding a mirror — is a story of a woman from the sea who once loved a lord of Howth. When she was betrayed, she returned to the waves, leaving her child behind. It is said that her spirit still drifts through the tower rooms nearest the shoreline, and that on stormy nights the echo of waves can be heard within the walls.
Staff and visitors have also reported footsteps on the upper landings and doors closing of their own accord when the castle is quiet. Some believe these are echoes of servants from earlier centuries — a residual haunting rather than an active presence.
