According to long-standing local lore, a house on Harbour Street—now a private residence—is said to be deeply haunted. The building was once a bustling public house. But its lively past is marked by tragedy. One night, as a guest was heading upstairs to bed, he was struck with a gun and fatally wounded. The story goes that the blood from the murder seeped into the floorboards, and despite efforts over the years, the stain remains to this day.

Strangely, the door to the room where the killing occurred can no longer be opened, as if something unseen is keeping it firmly shut.

The family living in the house have long reported paranormal disturbances, especially around midnight. At that hour, even when the window blinds are drawn down, they are said to suddenly fly up on their own. The activity doesn’t stop there. When the household is asleep, the front door knocker begins to knock repeatedly—though no one is outside. From the kitchen, crashing noises are sometimes heard, as though the heavy dresser is tipping over, though no disturbance is ever found.

Beside the house runs a narrow laneway, and this too is steeped in strange happenings. One night, a man walking down the lane happened to glance up at a tree that overhangs the path. To his horror, he saw a banshee perched among the branches, combing her long hair—an omen of death in Irish folklore. When she realised she was being watched, the banshee hurled her comb at him, narrowly missing his head.

Stories of unexplained phenomena, locked doors, phantom noises, and banshee sightings continue to keep the house and its surroundings at the centre of local ghost lore, with some residents still avoiding the lane after dark.
