About two miles outside Foxford, on the road to Castlebar, stand the ruins of a derelict green-tinted house long reputed to be haunted. According to local belief, the property is bound by the spirits of a mother and her baby, who remain strongly attached to the site.

Visitors have reported intense cold, the sound of an infant crying, doors slamming, foul smells, oppressive atmospheres, and even the apparition of a woman holding her child at the centre window, staring out at the road. A curious legend also claims that the house shifts an inch closer to the roadside each year.

One account tells of a young man and his friends who parked outside the house, mocking the ghost stories. As they laughed and shouted, their car was suddenly engulfed in a thick, black, smoke-like mass. Unable to see, they were then shaken by a furious, blood-curdling scream. The young man was left so traumatised that he was speechless and pale the next day, and had to seek medical help before eventually recovering through a reiki healer.

In another case, a man driving to Castlebar on a night shift experienced a terrifying encounter. As he passed the house, the passenger door of his car suddenly opened and slammed shut. Looking over, he saw the ghostly figure of a woman seated beside him, cradling a child. Frozen with fear, he kept driving until, moments later, the door opened and closed again—and the apparition vanished. Overcome with terror, the man turned his car around and swore never to pass the house by night again.
