In a garden in Maplerarney, near Smithborough, there grew a solitary whitethorn bush held in local awe. Its owner, John M. Kellan, cultivated right up to its roots – but never touched them, leaving a wide circle of undisturbed earth. For generations folks in the area believed the bush to be haunted.

When, one day, a mischievous neighbour gave the tree a vigorous shake and the grey trunk snapped, Kellan returned to curse him. Soon afterwards the man, while cutting his hedge, was struck across the eye by a stray whitethorn branch – and lost his sight in that eye.

Whether coincidence or curse, the tale became part of the local oral tradition – a warning that even the humblest tree might carry legends of its own.
