In the years just after the Second World War, many houses across Belfast stood empty. Evacuations, bomb damage, and dislocation had left whole streets with shuttered doors and broken windows. When a young couple moved into a long-abandoned house on the Lower Falls, they believed they had found a fresh start and set about making the place their home. But what awaited them inside was far from peaceful.
Almost immediately, strange disturbances plagued the house. Household objects vanished, only to reappear in unexpected places. At times, items were hurled violently across rooms, as though by unseen hands. Doors banged, footsteps echoed, and strange noises rang out when no one else was present. The most terrifying event of all came one night when their bed rose up and levitated from the floor, shaking with unnatural force.
Terrified and exhausted, the couple considered abandoning their new home altogether. But then a neighbour, well-versed in local folklore, offered a curious solution. She told them that if a child under the age of seven were to stay in the house, the supernatural disturbances would cease. Desperate, the couple agreed, and the neighbour’s young daughter spent a short time under their roof.
To their astonishment, from the moment the child arrived, the activity stopped. The violent disturbances, the noises, even the levitating bed—everything ceased. The house fell silent at last. Whether it was mere coincidence or some unspoken law of the supernatural, the couple never experienced another haunting in their home again.
