Hennessy’s Road is a quiet, predominantly residential street situated close to the centre of Waterford City. Despite its ordinary appearance, the road has long been associated with local folklore, including reports of a banshee and sightings of a headless horseman – traditions that persist in local memory rather than formal record.
One account, passed down through residents, tells of a summer night many years ago. A teenage girl rose from her bed to open a window in an upstairs room. As she looked out onto the street, she noticed what appeared to be a man moving against a strong wind – yet he did not walk. Instead, he seemed to hover, suspended roughly a foot above the ground, gliding silently through the darkness.
The following morning, her mother informed her that a neighbour had died during the night. Within the family, it was believed that what the girl witnessed was not a living person, but a manifestation of the man’s spirit at the moment of his passing.
