Have you visited Greyfriars Abbey (French Church), Waterford City, and did you have an experience you could not explain? Click “Add Your Experience” and share your story.
Originally founded as a Franciscan Friary by Sir Hugh Purcell in 1240, this medieval ruin has witnessed centuries of change. Following its suppression under Henry VIII in 1540, the building was repurposed as the Hospital of the Holy Ghost, serving as a charitable institution.
In the 1690s, part of the structure was granted to French Huguenots, earning it the name the French Church. After falling into disuse in the 1880s, it eventually came under state care in the early 1900s.
Local residents claim to have seen ghostly monks in and around the ruins.
