The ghost of Lady Gray of Graymount is said to haunt the atmospheric stretch of Gray’s Lane in Belfast. Her story is both tragic and unsettling, and like many old legends, several versions exist.
One widely repeated account claims that Lady Gray’s two children died by suicide after a cruel act by their father left them devastated. Overcome with grief, Lady Gray is said to have killed her husband in a moment of despair before taking her own life by hanging herself from the balcony of Graymount House. Some locals have even claimed to witness the chilling sight of her spectral form hanging from the balcony — a vision that vanishes as quickly as it appears.
But her haunting is most famously associated with the lane itself. According to tradition, Lady Gray’s ghost rides out on horseback along Gray’s Lane, following the same route she often travelled during her lifetime. The soft sound of hooves, glimpses of a silhouetted rider, and sudden cold drafts along the laneway have all been attributed to her restless spirit.
The legend endures as one of Belfast’s darker and more tragic hauntings.
