In the 1930s, a 76-year-old local man named Martin Dempsey recounted a chilling tale connected to a now-abandoned dwelling known as Grange House. His account was later recorded as part of the Dúchas Schools’ Collection, preserving a piece of local oral tradition that had already been passed down through generations.

According to the story, Grange House was built many years earlier by a man named Farrell, who had taken great care in designing the house and laying out its surrounding grounds. Not long after its completion, however, Farrell died suddenly. In the years that followed, locals began to whisper that his spirit had never truly left the place, and that the house had become disturbed by his presence.

One night, a group of visitors gathered inside the house and began playing cards. As the evening wore on, they heard strange and frightening noises coming from an upstairs room. At first, they dismissed the sounds, believing them to be nothing more than a prank by the household. They continued their game, attempting to ignore the growing unease.

Before long, a far more violent and unearthly noise shook the entire building. Panic spread through the group — some reportedly fainted, while others stood frozen in terror. When they eventually recovered enough to flee, the visitors rushed from the house, convinced they had narrowly escaped something unnatural.

The following day, their story was met with disbelief and ridicule. Determined to prove the truth of their experience, five men returned to the house, armed and resolute. They passed the evening talking, drinking, and playing cards as midnight approached. But when the hour struck, the atmosphere changed completely.

According to the account, a ghostly presence appeared, leaving the men unable to move or even raise their weapons. The apparition questioned them, and after hearing their reason for returning, four of the men were said to have been killed, while a fifth escaped, badly shaken. He later told the story — but died only weeks afterward.

From that time on, Grange House was said to have stood empty and shunned, its windows dark and its silence heavy. Even decades later, it was remembered locally as a place best avoided – a house marked by tragedy, fear, and something that never truly left.
