Set along the banks of the River Shannon, Glin Castle traces its origins to the 14th century, when it was built by the Knights of Glin, descendants of the powerful Earls of Desmond. Over the centuries, the castle endured repeated attacks before being rebuilt in the 1780s as a refined country residence. Today, Glin Castle remains a private home and elegant venue available for exclusive hire—but beneath its stately charm lies a rich history of unexplained activity.

Paranormal reports focus on several key areas of the castle, with the most active being the sweeping flying staircase. In 1867, a tragic accident occurred during maintenance work when a makeshift wooden scaffold collapsed. A tradesman—referred to only as Henry—fell to his death. Since then, his ghost is said to linger near the staircase, with multiple sightings reported over the decades.

One particularly eerie encounter came from Desmond FitzGerald, the 29th and final Knight of Glin. In 1949, just 12 years old and grieving the recent death of his father from tuberculosis, he noticed an old rope hanging ominously from the ceiling near the staircase. Startled, he called for his mother, who briefly saw the same apparition before it disappeared. Unexplained pools of fluid appeared nearby—believed to be linked to his father’s illness.

These reports weren’t limited to family members. Bob Duff, a former castle manager, confirmed that staff quietly acknowledged the presence of Henry’s spirit. The story of the rope and the sightings near the staircase were well known among long-serving employees.

Another frequently mentioned area is the Yellow Crown Bedroom, known for its icy chill and unsettling atmosphere. One staff member, despite years of service, admitted it was the only room in the castle where she truly felt uneasy—particularly the persistent feeling of being watched. It is here that Desmond’s father passed away, and many believe the energy of his final days still lingers.

In 1991, staff members Nancy and May had a more dramatic experience. As they settled in for the night, one heard heavy breathing and the sound of dragging footsteps outside their room. This was followed by a loud commotion from the nearby linen cupboard. When they investigated, the noises stopped abruptly—and no one was there. They later told Desmond, who revealed that a visiting medium had recently sensed a spiritual disturbance in the house, suggesting something had been stirred.

Other unexplained events include sightings of a woman’s skirt vanishing mid-step, a guest witnessing a figure pass through a solid wall, and the image of a young gardener calmly walking the grounds. The twist? The boy had once worked at Glin—but died while serving in the British Army overseas.
