Glasnevin is Ireland’s largest cemetery, and the souls remembered here include presidents, freedom fighters, artists and literary greats.
In February 1861, Captain John McNeill Boyd, was among several men who were swept out to sea while attempting to assist the crew of a stricken vessel, The Neptune, which had smashed into the east pier at Dun Laoghaire while trying to dock during a ferocious storm. A search boat eventually recovered his body a fortnight later. His dog was onboard the search boat and refused to leave his master’s side, even after the body had been interred at Glasnevin. The broken hearted pet passed away at the Captain’s graveside, having refused to accept food that was brought to him. Several witnesses reported seeing the ghost of the Captain’s loyal canine companion, resting by his grave and sightings are still occasionally reported.
John Kavanagh – a popular pub, known as “The Gravediggers” – is located near the cemetery. This is also haunted and you can read about that here.
