The Gate Theatre first opened its doors in 1928, offering Dublin audiences something new and daring. While the Abbey Theatre focused on Irish drama, the Gate specialised in European and experimental works. It was here that audiences first encountered Ibsen and Brecht — and where a young Orson Welles made his stage debut at just nineteen.
The building itself is older still. Part of the Rotunda complex on Parnell Square, it once served as a Georgian assembly room and later as a cinema before becoming the Gate’s intimate auditorium.
For decades, whispers have circulated about the theatre’s resident ghost: the Grey Lady. She is described as an elegant figure in grey silk, drifting silently through the corridors.
One story dates back to the Longford Company’s time at the theatre. A wardrobe assistant, bent over her sewing, looked up and saw Christine Longford, the late wife of the Earl of Longford, step into the room dressed in her familiar grey silk. But when the assistant glanced up again, the woman had vanished — the door never opened, and no one had left.
Another account came in June 1971, during the run of The Signalman’s Apprentice. The caretaker, locking up after hours, spotted what he thought was an actress in costume standing in the doorway of a dressing room. He called out, urging her to hurry. But as the stairwell light flickered and went dark, she faded from sight. Though he waited by the stage door, she never appeared — and a search of the building confirmed that no one else was inside.
Some believe the Grey Lady is Christine Longford herself. Others insist she belongs to an earlier chapter of the Gate’s history, perhaps a long-forgotten patron or performer. Whoever she is, witnesses agree on two details: she never speaks — and when she vanishes, she leaves behind a distinct, icy chill.
