Dating back to 1750, the Gandon Inn began life as the coach house for nearby Emo Court—the grand estate designed by the celebrated architect James Gandon. Over the centuries, it grew into a much-loved inn, welcoming guests with ten boutique rooms and a restaurant that became a favourite of both locals and travellers.
Like many smaller venues, the inn closed its doors during the pandemic. While the building itself has yet to reopen, the site remains active thanks to an award-winning service station on the grounds. Far from abandoned, the inn still stands as a familiar landmark, with the possibility of a revival in the future.
But the Gandon Inn is remembered for more than its hospitality. Stories persist of a resident spirit known simply as “Queenie.” Staff often reported the distinct sensation of being watched as they went about their duties. Queenie was never thought of as malicious—rather, she was a quiet, watchful presence who made herself known from time to time.
