Nestled in the heart of Kilmallock—a historic medieval town in County Limerick—Friars’ Gate Theatre may be a modern performance space, but its roots are firmly embedded in the past. Built within the original gable walls of an older structure, the theatre opened its doors in 1997 and offers an intimate setting with just 130 seats. Yet, according to some, there may be more than just ticketed guests occupying the venue.

Since the early 2010s, staff and visitors have reported unexplained phenomena including phantom whispers, footsteps echoing through empty corridors, sudden chills, and the distinct feeling of being watched—often when no one else was around.

One particularly vivid encounter came from a volunteer technician who claimed to see a woman in period dress standing silently in the wings during a rehearsal. Described as statuesque and faintly glowing, the figure reportedly vanished without a trace when approached.

The theatre’s then-manager, Caoimhe, shared her own unsettling experiences. While she never saw an apparition herself, she frequently sensed a heavy, oppressive atmosphere during late hours. Cold spots would appear suddenly, and the air would grow inexplicably thick.

These growing reports drew the attention of GhostÉire, a paranormal investigation team, who conducted an overnight investigation at the theatre in 2015. Using a combination of electronic equipment and a séance involving a Ouija board, the team claimed contact with a spirit identifying itself only as “A,” who purportedly died in 1680. They also reported sensing two female spirits—one of whom seemed to have suffered fatal burns, possibly linked to historical conflict or fire.

The séance was accompanied by sudden drops in temperature, the smell of burning wood or fabric, and episodes of breathing difficulty—reported by multiple attendees, including Caoimhe. Equipment malfunctioned without explanation, and one photograph captured what appeared to be a swirling white mist on an otherwise empty stage.
