John Savage was once a man of stature in the community – wealthy mill owner, magistrate, and town councillor. Outwardly, he seemed to have everything: influence, property, and respect. Yet beneath the surface, the weight of these responsibilities pressed heavily upon him. Neighbours began to notice strange behaviour. Savage was often seen pacing the streets or the grounds of his mill, muttering over and over the same haunting refrain: “I can’t take much more of this.”

The strain eventually overcame him. In a moment of despair, John Savage ended his own life, taking a straight razor to his throat and cutting it from ear to ear. His tragic death shocked the town, and whispers of his decline spread quickly.

But the story did not end there. For many years afterwards, the people of the Flax Street area claimed that Savage’s ghost still lingered. His spectral form was often reported drifting through the mill he had once owned, or walking along the very street he had built behind it. Witnesses spoke of an unnerving detail: as the apparition passed by – seemingly unaware of the living – he would still be muttering those same desperate words, “I can’t take much more of this.”

It seemed that even in death, John Savage remained trapped in the torment that had consumed him in life, condemned to endlessly repeat his despair for all who crossed his path.
