Flame Gasworks opened in 1855 and remained active until 1987. Having been fully restored, the Gasworks Preservation Society opened the site as a museum in 2002 and now visitors can learn about how gas was extracted from coal and used to provide power in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Volunteers working at the site have reported seeing the ghost of a woman walking across the yard, while poltergeist activity has also taken place throughout the property.
