Before Youghal’s waterfront renewal, a narrow lane called Fishamble (or Fish Shamble) Lane led from the Main Street to the quays. Locals once told of a phantom seaman who shuffled along it after dark, quietly greeting late-night passers-by with a murmured “Good night.” He was never known to harm anyone – just a lingering echo of Youghal’s seafaring past.

When the old lane was cleared and renamed Liberty Street, the sightings stopped. Perhaps the sailor finally found his way home – or perhaps the roadworks simply erased the last trace of his nightly route.
