Enniskillen Castle rises proudly on the banks of the River Erne in County Fermanagh. Built around 1428 by Hugh Maguire, chieftain of the Maguire clan, this formidable stronghold once controlled the vital waterways leading into Ulster. Over the centuries, it endured countless sieges and battles, playing a key role during the Tudor conquest of Ireland and the later Williamite Wars.
Following the decline of the Gaelic chieftains, the castle fell under British control and was eventually converted into a military barracks. Today, it houses two fascinating museums—the Fermanagh County Museum and the Inniskillings Museum—offering visitors a deep dive into local history, military traditions, and life in Fermanagh through the ages.
But not all of the castle’s residents have left. The ghost of a lone soldier is said to patrol the battlements at dusk, his figure clad in a faded military uniform. Believed to be the spirit of a loyal guard who perished during a siege, he continues his eternal vigil over the ancient stronghold.
Near the old prison cells, visitors have reported the soft, sorrowful cries of a woman. Though her identity remains a mystery, many believe she is the grieving wife or mother of a soldier who never returned home.
Throughout the castle’s shadowed corridors, the echoes of the past seem ever-present. Staff and visitors alike have heard the clatter of unseen chains, the heavy tread of boots in empty hallways, and the low murmur of voices when no one else is near. Shadowy figures have also been glimpsed slipping across doorways and stone walls, vanishing the moment anyone draws near.
