Elsinore House dates to the 1820s. According to folklore, the once fine house was constructed by John Black who worked as merchant and ship builder, but who may have also been a smuggler. In the 1870s, the property was acquired by William Middleton. Middleton’s sister would spend the summer here, and as grandmother to William Butler Yeats, he would also spend some of their time here.

As referenced at other properties associated with W B Yeats, he was an avid believer in the paranormal and claimed to see ghosts at properties he would spend time at. Elsinore House was no exception. In his adult years, Yeats wrote of how he and his brother Jack, would hear tapping on the windows. He attributed this to the ghosts of smugglers.
