Elizabeth Fort, located on Barrack Street in Cork city, is a star-shaped fort originally constructed in 1601 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. Built to defend the city following the Battle of Kinsale, it occupies a commanding position overlooking Cork and has played a continuous role in the city’s history for over four centuries.

During that time, the fort has seen a wide range of uses. It has served as a military barracks, a depot for prisoners awaiting transportation, a food storage site during the Great Famine, a Royal Irish Constabulary station, and more recently as a Garda station until its closure in 2013. Today, it stands as a heritage site open to the public.

In the 19th century, the fort was used as a holding facility for female prisoners prior to transportation to Australia. Nearby Gallows Green – located just outside the fort – was used for public executions, adding to the site’s association with punishment and death.

It is from this layered and often harsh history that the fort’s reputation for haunting is said to arise.

Stories persist of former prisoners lingering within the walls, particularly women who were held there before transportation. One of the most frequently repeated tales concerns a woman named Mary Fagan, described in local accounts as having been arrested for theft and deceit. According to the story, while awaiting transportation, it was discovered that she had previously escaped from custody. As a result, she was allegedly condemned to death and executed at Gallows Green.

Tradition holds that, in the time leading up to her execution, she repeatedly muttered a curse against those who had imprisoned her, vowing that her spirit would remain and bring unrest to the fort. While there is no verified historical record confirming this account, it has become one of the central legends associated with the site.

Other stories speak of apparitions linked to periods of unrest, including references to prisoners from the late 18th century, as well as reports of a headless figure seen within the grounds. These accounts are anecdotal and vary widely in detail.

In more recent years, the fort has attracted the attention of paranormal investigators. Groups such as the Cork Supernatural Society have carried out investigations at the site, reporting unexplained sounds including footsteps, doors moving without visible cause, and recordings interpreted as electronic voice phenomena. These findings, while of interest, remain unverified.
