Once the seat of the Eccles family near Fintona, Ecclesville House stood as a substantial country residence for generations before its eventual demolition in the late twentieth century. Although nothing of the original house survives today, one enduring tale continues to surface in local memory: the presence of a female ghost known locally as Aunt Hessey.

Unlike many so-called “haunted houses,” no apparition is said to have ever been seen here. Instead, witnesses described the distinctive rustling of a silken dress moving through the former drawing room, as if a woman were passing between the furniture in quiet evening light.

On at least one occasion, a guest claimed to hear someone playing the piano, despite the room being empty.

The figure is occasionally linked by tradition to a former female member of the household, remembered only by the nickname Aunt Hessey. No contemporary written account confirms who she was, or whether the story stems from an actual family memory or a later piece of folklore attached to the site after its demolition.

Nothing of the old manor survives, although the wider estate and surrounding landscape still recall the long presence of the Eccles family in this part of County Tyrone.
