With parts of it dating to the twelfth century, Dunsany Castle is the residence of the Lords of Dunsany and is one of the oldest continually inhabited buildings in the republic.
An old folk story references how a previous Lord returned home after a day of hunting, when he heard a voice warning – “do not come in here.” He thought that there might be someone in trouble so he discarded the warning. As he walked in, he noted a lady in white standing before him. Her eyes were looking upward but she didn’t speak. He left her for a moment and returned with another witness, but she had vanished and the servants were working away oblivious.
One of the castle bedrooms is reputedly haunted, and a headless horseman has reportedly been spotted near the gateway at Dunsany Bridge. Sadly, I have no further information to share at this point.
