Perched on the edge of a dramatic cliff near Fahan on the Dingle Peninsula, Dunbeg Fort is one of Ireland’s most striking examples of early defensive architecture. Archaeologists believe it dates back to the Iron Age, around 500 BC, though some suggest its origins may reach even further into the Bronze Age. Its true purpose remains a mystery. Some scholars argue it served as a ritual or ceremonial site, while others suggest it may have been the residence of an elite family, chosen for its commanding view over Dingle Bay.
Centuries of wind and sea have gnawed at its stone walls, yet the fort still seems to guard its secrets. And according to one paranormal investigation team, not all of its inhabitants have departed.
During a late-night séance held within the site, the team reported extraordinary results. They claimed to have made contact with a spirit identifying itself as “Elliott,” whose first utterance was a single, chilling word: “Fire.” Moments later, further responses were allegedly heard — in Irish, English, and even Spanish — including the desperate cry of a woman’s voice pleading, “Help me.”
As the séance continued, the investigators stated that they were communicating with nine distinct presences — six men and three women — most of whom appeared to date from the 12th to 14th centuries. Through their exchanges, the team concluded that Dunbeg Fort had once been the scene of violent conflict, where its former occupants were slain and dispossessed of their land. At one point, a soft female voice reportedly murmured the word “No,” followed by a deep, sorrowful moan.
Curiously, the spirits also seemed to confirm that they had once eaten goat — a detail that echoed archaeological findings from excavations at the site, where goat bones and skins were indeed uncovered.
