Just south of Rathfriland, along the Banbridge Road, stand two historic buildings forever linked to one of literature’s most famous families: Drumballyroney Church and the Brontë School. In the early 19th century, Patrick Brontë—father of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne – served as the local Church of Ireland minister and taught in the adjacent schoolhouse. Today, the quiet site draws more than just history enthusiasts. Many claim it is haunted—by the spirits of the Brontë family themselves.

Patrick Brontë’s ghost is said to wander both the church and the graveyard beside it. Locals have reported sightings of a tall, solitary figure moving silently through the headstones after dark. Flickering lights, sudden chills, and a lingering sense of being watched have all been described by those who’ve spent time on the grounds after sunset.

One of the most intriguing investigations took place in November 2009, when a team of paranormal researchers spent the night at the church and school. What they experienced would stay with them for years.

While standing inside the church, several investigators heard the distinct sound of footsteps echoing up the central aisle, despite the building being empty. Outside in the graveyard, a number of team members reported seeing a shadowy figure moving purposefully between the headstones. Though fleeting, the sightings were consistent – and unnerving.

Inside the church, a photographer captured a series of images showing unexplained light anomalies – orbs and streaks not visible to the naked eye. But it was inside the old schoolhouse where the team’s equipment picked up something truly remarkable.

Using audio recording devices, the investigators captured the voice of a young girl who identified herself as Molly. She said she had once attended the school and that there were “six pupils” in total. The voice sounded calm and curious, not distressed or angry. The team described the communication as a child simply trying to be heard – eager to share her story.

Later that evening, another voice came through the equipment. This time, the message was brief: “Bronte School… Patrick.” Was this the spirit of Patrick Brontë himself? The investigators were struck by the clarity of the statement, and its relevance to the site’s history.

As the night wore on, the atmosphere grew heavier. Several team members reported sudden drops in temperature and an overwhelming feeling of a presence nearby. Then things escalated.

Inside the church, a cameraman felt something pull at his equipment, as if an unseen hand had tried to snatch it away. Moments later, a heavy recording device was knocked over without explanation. Loud bangs, the sound of footsteps, and a series of sharp knocks were heard coming from the rear of the church—though no one was there. Their camera began to malfunction, drifting out of focus without cause, and eventually became inoperable.

The team later speculated that these disturbances may have been the work of another spirit associated with the site: the elusive and infamous Squire Hawkins, a local landowner known for his eccentric and forceful personality. Some believe his spirit remains tied to the church, perhaps unhappy with any intrusion.

Whether it’s Patrick Brontë, young Molly, or the assertive Squire Hawkins, Drumballyroney Church and the Brontë School remain active locations for reported paranormal phenomena. With their rich literary and spiritual history, these buildings continue to intrigue both scholars and ghost hunters alike.
