Doneraile Court is a magnificent country house set in 400 acres of parkland. The property dates to the late seventeenth century.
In August 1887, a farmer witnessed the terrifying vision of a phantom coach, led by four headless horses, pulling out of Doneraile Court. It transpired that the vision was a harbinger of doom for the family in residence, as he later learned that Viscount Doneraile had died around the time that he saw the phantom coach.
The house itself is believed to be haunted by the ghosts of Lady Casteltown. Prince Michael of Greece once visited the property, and went searching for Lady Castletown. The Prince went from room to room but didn’t feel her presence in any of the grand rooms. It wasn’t until he went up to the former servant’s quarters that he encountered her spirit. Captain Montgomery, guardian of the house, was reluctant to accept that a lady of her stature would resort to sleeping in servant accommodation, but the Prince insisted. Six months later, Montgomery contacted the Prince to share the outcome of some research that he had undertaken following their discussion, and his findings were astonishing. In her time, Lady Castletown was considered very beautiful. But later, she developed a severe skin disorder which left her very self conscious. She chose to move to a room on the second floor and live in the servant’s quarters to avoid being seen by those who knew her. She died there distressed and alone.
