Believed to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited buildings in Ireland, Donamon Castle stands on the site of a fort originally built in 1154. Over the centuries, it endured numerous attacks and periods of destruction, yet each time it was painstakingly rebuilt—a testament to the resilience and determination of its inhabitants.

Between 1920 and 1939, the castle stood vacant, but it was far from empty. Locals believed it was haunted by the spirit of a former bailiff, whose ghostly presence was so feared that few dared to enter the grounds. The bailiff, known for the strange pot he wore around his neck, became a figure of local legend. Eventually, a priest was called to deal with the haunting. In a dramatic attempt to end the disturbance, the spirit was said to have been sealed inside a room—bricked in, never to leave again.
