Among the many stories that surrounded the old Divis Flats in Belfast, one of the most unsettling concerned a stairwell that locals referred to as “the Crying Stairs.” Built in the 1960s, Divis became one of the most troubled housing complexes of the Northern Ireland conflict, and many residents lived through shootings, explosions and sudden loss. Out of that atmosphere, stories of a haunted stairway began to circulate.
According to local lore, the sound of crying or even screams was sometimes heard echoing down one particular stairwell long after nightfall. Older residents claimed the sounds were connected to a violent incident during the Troubles, and some believed that the voices belonged to those who had died there. Others insisted they simply reflected the fear and trauma that many families endured while living in the complex.
As with many urban legends, no official record ties these claims to a specific event, and no single stairwell has ever been firmly identified. The original blocks have since been demolished, leaving little physical trace of the place where the cries were said to be heard. Yet the story survives in fragments of memory and conversation, passed on by those who lived there during some of Belfast’s most difficult years.
