Between Leixlip and Maynooth, the Royal Canal’s 13th Lock at Deey Bridge has long carried a haunted reputation among boatmen and locals. Stories tell of voices and “psychic screams” rising from the lock cut on still nights, and crews once avoided tying up here after dark.

The legend is sometimes linked to a supposed eighteenth-century passenger-boat sinking at the site; that detail doesn’t stand up—there’s no record of a passenger boat going down at Deey Bridge. It likely reflects a later mix-up with a well-documented nineteenth-century canal tragedy elsewhere on the line. What endures at Deey Bridge is the sound-based lore: disembodied cries, echoes that seem to move against the water, and a general unease reported by night walkers and anglers.

The lock’s notoriety even found its way into print and song, helping to cement the 13th Lock as one of the Royal Canal’s best-known haunted stretches.
