The Crown Liquor Saloon (The Crown Bar) opened as the Railway Tavern in the early nineteenth century. In 1885, Patrick Flanagan changed the name of the pub to the Crown Bar and introduced many of the decorative touches that are still evident today. The striking interior includes Victorian snugs, intricate carvings, stained glass windows, a polished granite counter and original gas lamps. Little wonder that film crews have used the venue in film and television – indeed, the BBC made a documentary about it in 2009.
The pub is believed to be haunted by the ghost of a prostitute who died after falling down the stairs many years ago, but the jury is out as to whether “Amelia” tripped or was pushed. The ghost of a man, believed to be former owner Patrick Flanagan is also said to return on occasion to watch over the stylish venue he created all those years ago.
