During the Second World War, as German air raids threatened Belfast, many city families sought safety in the countryside. One such family relocated to the remote shores of Tyrella Beach in County Down, where they managed to secure a small, weather-beaten cottage by the sea.

The cottage was humble and isolated—no electricity, no running water, and surrounded by sand dunes and grassy banks. But for the children, it was a haven of freedom. With the waves as their soundtrack and nature as their playground, they embraced the simplicity of their new summer life.

When the parents eventually returned to Belfast for work, they left their older teenagers behind to enjoy the final weeks of summer. It was during this quieter time that strange events began to unfold.

One of the boys started to notice an odd sensation at night—as though someone was watching him from the corner of his bedroom. It wasn’t menacing, just… present. He described the feeling as persistent and oddly comforting rather than frightening.

Curious rather than alarmed, he began to focus on the corner more carefully—and it wasn’t long before he saw the outline of a young girl appearing faintly in the shadows. Over time, the image became clearer. She was small, pale, and appeared to be drenched, with seaweed tangled in her hair.

Through conversations with locals and later research, the boy discovered a heartbreaking backstory. Years earlier, a Sunday School outing from a nearby village had ended in tragedy when one of the girls drowned during a swim. Her body had been recovered from the water and, with no immediate way to return it to the village, had been laid in the very cottage overnight until arrangements could be made.

After learning this, the sightings began to make more sense—but the unexplained activity didn’t stop there.

At night, the teenagers began to hear the rhythmic clicking of bicycle pedals, echoing along the path outside the cottage. Yet when they looked, there was no bicycle—and no one in sight. It became a recurring sound, always after dark, always in the same pattern—as if someone was riding in circles just out of view.

Even more unsettling were the wet clumps of seaweed that appeared on the front doorstep in the mornings. No storms had rolled in. No animals had disturbed the area. And the cottage itself sat twenty yards from the shoreline, separated by a wide grassy embankment. There was no way the tide could have reached the door—and certainly no logical way the seaweed could have arrived there naturally.

To this day, some say the spirit of that drowned girl still lingers—drawn to the last place she was laid to rest, quietly watching from the corners of the old stone walls, her presence marked by the click of phantom pedals and the briny trail of seaweed left behind.

The cottage is no longer there—but those who remember it speak of its beauty, its isolation—and the girl who never quite left the shore.
