Coppers takes its name from the infamous “hanging judge,” Lord Clonmel, who once lived in the building now home to the nightclub. Known for his ruthless sentencing and lack of mercy, he earned a fearsome reputation among Dubliners. Lord Clonmel was also said to be a heavy drinker, with a distinctive ruby-red, alcohol-flushed face—giving rise to the nickname “Copper Face.” Some partygoers even claim to have seen his ghostly visage lingering in the club to this day.
