The Sisters of Mercy arrived in Cobh (then known as Queenstown) in 1850 in response to the widespread poverty, especially after the Great Famine (1845-1852). Many people in Cobh were still recovering from the devastating effects of the famine, and there was a desperate need for support, particularly for women and children.

From its inception, the Convent of Mercy in Cobh was known for its role in education, particularly for girls. The Sisters established a school to provide a Catholic education, and over time, the school expanded, offering both primary and secondary education. The Sisters of Mercy emphasized academic learning alongside spiritual and moral development, with a particular focus on instilling a sense of charity and service.

Beyond education, the convent also became involved in healthcare, helping the sick and providing assistance to the poor. The order’s commitment to these social services reflected the broader mission of the Sisters of Mercy to serve those in need, especially in communities that were economically disadvantaged. The convent closed in 2009 and the property is now in private ownership. I understand the owners are keen for the site to become a community resource in the future, but for now, the building is closed and under restoration.

The former convent is widely believed to be haunted and several paranormal investigations have taken place here with teams claiming that the top floor is the most active area. So far, the information I have seen has been anecdotal.
