Convent life in Ireland was often marked by isolation and strict discipline, and many historical accounts highlight the harsh conditions endured by both nuns and those under their care. It is not uncommon to hear of paranormal tales attached to these old buildings.
In March 2017, demolition work had begun at the Convent of Mercy in Claremorris. A local media company, attended to capture some final shots of the old building as it was being torn down. But when the footage was reviewed, there was a curious image in an upper floor window. It was the unmistakable figure of a nun wearing a traditional habit, gazing silently outward.
The videographer was adamant “It’s not a nun, just a bit of light”. A local historian wrote the image off as a “bit of fun”. But many others were not so sure. Some were convinced they saw something genuine.
One comment even mentioned that a nun had been talked about since their grandparents were children, so there was a story attached to it at least.
