Located along Battery Road in Longford Town, Sean Connolly Barracks—formerly known as the Longford Cavalry Barracks—stands as a prominent landmark with a rich military history. Constructed between 1810 and 1820 and designed by architect John Behan, the barracks served as a key military installation until its closure in 2009.
Originally established on land acquired by the War Office in 1774, the site has long been associated with military operations and historical events. But beyond its strategic importance, the barracks is also steeped in local legend.
Once the site of a military hospital, the grounds are said to echo with unexplained wailing sounds, and at a certain hour of the night, witnesses claim to see the ghostly figure of a mounted soldier riding silently around the square.
