Clonyn Castle was built by Richard Nugent in 1639. Ten years later, he set it alight rather than offer Cromwell’s army accommodation in his home. The castle was later rebuilt and is now a private home. In recent years, the grounds surrounding the castle were used as a popular golf club, although this has since closed and the land is now strictly private.
Located within the grounds there is a wooded area where a cottage once stood. Legend has it that two ladies of the Nugent family once resided here while the castle was being rebuilt, and that one of them died is suspicious circumstances. Some suggest that her sister may have been implicated in the death. The property was later abandoned and while only a few stones may remain, it is said that a lady in white has been seem walking through the woods.
