Clones Railway Station, which served the town of Clones from 1858 until its closure in 1960, now lies in ruins, its platforms and tracks long abandoned. Yet in the summer of 1924, two unsuspecting passengers discovered that the station still held echoes of its past—echoes that were very much alive.
On a warm evening, two men arrived at the station to catch a train to Armagh. Enjoying the fine weather, they chose to sit outside on a bench. Without warning, a man’s voice rang out from the waiting room, calling for help. Alarmed, they hurried inside, but found only two long benches and a narrow table between them—completely empty.
Uneasy, they returned to their seats. Soon, the faint rumble of an approaching train filled the air. The whistle blew—but no plume of smoke appeared. Rising to board, they were hit by a rush of wind as the invisible train thundered past, strong enough to snatch the cap from one man’s head.
As they stood frozen, a scream tore through the air from the waiting room. The station’s signalman emerged from his office, and after hearing their account, he gave a chilling explanation. The year before, a man had thrown himself in front of a train at the very station. His broken body had been carried into the waiting room and laid on that same narrow table, where he suffered an agonising death between the two benches.
