In June 1968 the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady opened the Sacred Heart Nursing Home in Mullingar. The nursing home was soon converted to a hospital, initially known as the Sacred Heart Hospital. It later became St. Francis Medical Centre and in 1995, St. Francis Private Hospital. In 2010, the Sisters sold the hospital, which is now owned by a private group.
I have visited this hospital myself and while the staff are lovely and the care is excellent, the building itself certainly has the feel of a convent in places. In a casual conversation with a member of staff, I was advised that workers have experienced unusual activity at the hospital. This is a discussion that I hope to continue but before we parted, they volunteered that there is a room in the basement where bins have been noted opening and closing of their own accord. Some staff have even refused to go in there.
TBC. I hope.
